Crop damage in AP pushes up Potato prices

Potato futures in India to continue bullish momentum on the back of delayed monsoon along with crop damage in major producing regions. Rising vegetable prices also supported the potato price rise in medium term.

The sowing of potato seed in Karnataka continued but the sowing is affected by less and delayed rains till now. The seed sowing in Maharashtra for Kharif is yet to start and expected to be delayed due to delay arrival of monsoon. 2011-12 output is around 20% than the NHRDF’s estimates of 43 million tonnes.

About 220 lakh tonnes of potato is stored in different cold storage. Although 12-13% of the cold storage stocks are released so far from overall producing belts, they are much lower compared to normal due to lower demand.

During the current year around 89.00 lakhs MT potatoes stored in cold stores in Uttar Pradesh and in Punjab around 16 lakhs MT potatoes.In Bihar State around 10.03 lakh MT potatoes are stored in Government cold stores. In West Bengal around 50 lakh MT potatoes are stored in cold stores. [ News Source ]
